Royal Ontario Museum

This past Friday we had the opportunity of going to the Royal Ontario Museum  to talk with a representative of the web development department.  The speaker left us wanting as she did not go into any detail really about her job description or the behind the scenes day-to-day of her department, but I was interested to find out that a lot of the ROM's design needs are contracted out to an agency in New York, a detail that it not widely publicized and that I find quite disgusting considering how much talent thrives in Toronto.
Although I found the talk quite disappointing, I still got to see the exhibit by El Anatsui, an amazing artist from Ghana. Using pieces of garbage like discarded bottle camps, the artist builds stunning sculptures, such as the ones you see below.

Sapient Nitro

This week in Professional Topics we had 3 individuals from Sapient Nitro come to visit us.
Sonja, Head of Hiring; Aiko, Experience Design Lead; and David Senior Art Director.  In the past we have had formal presentations, but they chose to be very informal - it was a great way to actually get a sense of what their culture is all about.

Sapient is a large company, 6000 people worldwide. Sapient Nitro is definitely not a one trick pony, this company does everything from sitemaps and wireframes to largescale interactive productions.

Creative Niche

This past Friday, Stephen Hodges and Adele Wootton from Creative Niche came to speak to us about the art of resume writing and prospects of a job search in a creative community. As I am new to the design industry I found this presentation to be extremely helpful in preparing me for an upcoming job search and what to expect when I am finished the Web Design program.

        Stephen Bennett

"Not Just A Visual Layer, But About Designing Solutions..."

Stephen Bennett of Juniper Park was kind enough to be this week's guest lecture for Professional Topics. Previously, Bennett was Creative Director at Grip Limited. He has also held positions at Blast Radius, Henderson Bas and MacLaren McCann.
Mr. Bennett described two types of marketing agencies. 'Pure Play' is purely digital and can be used to describe agencies such as Blue Zone, Mod7, Blast Radius, Ninedots and Henderson BAS'Integrated' is the more traditional agency and can be used to describe Juniper Park (as well as McLaren McCann, Grip Limited).

"Juniper Park is a place where the disciplines of strategy, design and advertising come to play."

For a company that is less than 3 years old, Juniper Park has a healthy client list of established companies (mostly US based) such as Pepsico, Sun Chips, Lays, Starbucks, Virgin Mobile, Quaker, Canadian Club and many more. They are well versed in 'Broadcast', 'Digital', 'Print', 'Out-Of-Home' and 'Statement.'  Juniper Park has 75 employees, made up Art Directors, Designers, Writers, Developers, Producers and Creative Directors.  http://www.juniperpark.com/

Juniper Park's aim is to establish a brand connection to the consumer through stories and brand narrative. They are  unique in that they use a vendor model; meaning they participate in the early stages of ideation and establishment of brands but do not handle production.  Mr. Bennett described the simplification process they go through with the client, asking them to think of their brand as a chair. They are asked to describe the appearance of the chair, who would use the chair and what purpose the chair would serve. Through this process Juniper Park and the client can develop the brand to the next level by articulating its 'story.' Clients want their brand to be relevant.

He uses the following video as a metaphor for a brand, and his involvement as Creative Director:

Mr. Bennett discussed the Apple brand and the reasons for their success.  The 1984 commercial says it all: Apple's focus on humanity and 'unleashing people's creativity."
        Apple Commercial 1984

He demonstrates the importance of the 'brand,' and the effect it can have on the consumer. To do this Mr. Bennet used Apple and their iPhone 4.

        Stephen's Tips...
"Its Not About You Know, Its About Who Knows you"
        "Make friends"
        "Be Curious"
        "Take Your Time"
        "Execution is Everything"

        Meg Kerr

"Social media is like teen sex. Everyone wants to do it. No one knows how. When finally done, there is surprise its not better" - Avinash Kaushik (analytics evangelist at Google)

This past Friday, we were fortunate enough to be paid a visit by Meg Kerr, a Social Media Integration Manager at Mosaic. Ms. Kerr's presentation outlined the term "social media" and what it has come to encompass in our current society. She discussed the various social networks currently available, the pros and cons of using these networks and the effects they are having on the methods through which we share our information.
"Social media is an umbrella term that defines the various activities that integrate technology, social interaction, and the construction of words, pictures, videos and audio" - Wikipedia

Ms. Kerr discussed the various social media trends happening at the moment.  Real Time + Smartphones, Location Based Services and issues of privacy. Smartphones now allow anyone to share and search for information in real time, changing immensely the way and from which sources  we get our information. Whether or not its accurate is a whole other issue.  GPS enabled Smartphones have made things even easier to share through LBS such as Foursquare, Gowalla and Yelp. Issues of privacy and "living online" have caused a movement in the other direction. Social media sites that require a strict membership have developed, and some have gone as far as deleting their Facebook and Twitter accounts for good. (For those ready to take the plunge: http://suicidemachine.org/)
Facebook: 500 million users around the world. (Although 5 of the top 7 countries on Facebook are actually declining in over all number of users)
Foursquare: 3 million users (and growing rapidly)
These statistics and other interesting facts can be found in the following:
        Socialnomics: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhPgUcjGQAw

Ms. Kerr attended Western University in London, Ontario where she obtained her Undergraduate degree in Media Information and Technoculture. She also completed a diploma in Broadcast Journalism at Fanshawe College. After a some time with Corus Entertainment, Ms. Kerr made the move to Mosaic in 2006.  Ms. Kerr provides creative digital strategy, community management, social media measurement, blog outreach, content creation, hybrid event planning, and manages multiple internal corporate online properties.  Ms. Kerr describes her job as "conception of a program, less execution." Working with a creative team, it is her responsibility to find an integration based on the brand or image of a product. Brand ambassadors are a major tool used in experiential marketing. Ultimately her main goal is to sell; but she is fascinated by the ability to receive feedback and participation from all parts of the world through tools such as Twitter and Foursquare.  An example of this is the Rogers Cup. Using Twitter, people were able to communicate and comment in real time as the game progressed.

Mosaic describes themselves as, (the) "leaders in the new reality of consumer-centric marketing." Mosaic XM develops "unique and customized branded experience that stop, engage, entertain and educate customers." Some of their clients include Cadbury, Proctor and Gamble, Coca Cola and Gilette.
They have locations across North America, including Texas and Chicago.

        Jay Schacher

"Always Be A Team Player, Not A Hero."

In this week's Professional Topics class, we had the pleasure of having Jay Schacher as our guest speaker. Mr. Schacher works as a senior designer for Henderson Bas,  a successful award winning advertising agency in downtown Toronto.

Mr. Schacher completed his Undergraduate degree at York University in Visual Arts and Multimedia and proceeded to attend the Sheridan Web Design program in 2006.  Having graduated from the program Mr. Schacher started off at Organic Inc. (www.organic.com).  Although he found it challenging to adjust from a fine arts background to a design  outlook,  Mr. Schacher's obvious hardwork has paid off as some of his past clients include Timex, Jamieson, Breton, SHER-WOOD Hockey Concepts, Sirius Radio, Dillon's and Infusion.

Specializing in interactive web experiences, online advertising, mobile and print, some of Henderson Bas' clients include Joe Fresh, Capitol One, Tim Horton's, Coca Cola Ltd., Mercedes Benz, Nintendo, LG and eBay.
        Example: www.joe.ca

The creative department consists of four Junior Designers, three Senior Designers, three Art Directors, an Associate Creative Director and a Creative Director. A Senior Designer's responsibilities include brainstorming, conceptualizing, designing, overseeing work and meeting time lines. When working on a project, Mr. Schacher reports to first the Art Director, then Creative Director,  Account Manager and lastly to the Client. In order to build a website design from concept to finished product,  he must first brainstorms ideas, sketch a concept, present to the client, and then proceed to design, build and revise the site to suit the client's needs. Currently Mr. Schacher is working on projects for LG Shine Plus, LG Get Connected and iCoke.ca. In the next five to ten years, Mr. Schacher would like eventually be an Art Director.
        Example of recent work: www.lgshineplus.com

Mr. Schacher left us with some important advice: Value your student work, as it is one of the only times you will have creative control over your work; keep your classmates close, as they will be your connections in the industry; and to always be a team player, not a hero.

        First Day of Professional Topics

Today we started off our Friday with Professional Topics I.  As a class we viewed all the application portfolios and were able to see the diverse set of skills that each member will bring to the program. Each week a different guest speaker from the various areas of the web design industry will speak to our class. Here I will be summarizing the pertinent information and interesting facts.
