Jay Schacher

"Always Be A Team Player, Not A Hero."

In this week's Professional Topics class, we had the pleasure of having Jay Schacher as our guest speaker. Mr. Schacher works as a senior designer for Henderson Bas,  a successful award winning advertising agency in downtown Toronto.

Mr. Schacher completed his Undergraduate degree at York University in Visual Arts and Multimedia and proceeded to attend the Sheridan Web Design program in 2006.  Having graduated from the program Mr. Schacher started off at Organic Inc. (www.organic.com).  Although he found it challenging to adjust from a fine arts background to a design  outlook,  Mr. Schacher's obvious hardwork has paid off as some of his past clients include Timex, Jamieson, Breton, SHER-WOOD Hockey Concepts, Sirius Radio, Dillon's and Infusion.

Specializing in interactive web experiences, online advertising, mobile and print, some of Henderson Bas' clients include Joe Fresh, Capitol One, Tim Horton's, Coca Cola Ltd., Mercedes Benz, Nintendo, LG and eBay.
Example: www.joe.ca

The creative department consists of four Junior Designers, three Senior Designers, three Art Directors, an Associate Creative Director and a Creative Director. A Senior Designer's responsibilities include brainstorming, conceptualizing, designing, overseeing work and meeting time lines. When working on a project, Mr. Schacher reports to first the Art Director, then Creative Director,  Account Manager and lastly to the Client. In order to build a website design from concept to finished product,  he must first brainstorms ideas, sketch a concept, present to the client, and then proceed to design, build and revise the site to suit the client's needs. Currently Mr. Schacher is working on projects for LG Shine Plus, LG Get Connected and iCoke.ca. In the next five to ten years, Mr. Schacher would like eventually be an Art Director.

Mr. Schacher left us with some important advice: Value your student work, as it is one of the only times you will have creative control over your work; keep your classmates close, as they will be your connections in the industry; and to always be a team player, not a hero.
